From the author of "The Locklear Letters", this is an irreverent
and hilarious story collection about the lives we lead. And the
lives we wish we led. In tales filled with off-beat characters, we
meet the proud winner of an inter-office e-mail contest; a
mysterious, one-armed, Texaco attendant with a penchant for reading
car manuals; and, in the title story, a misguided autobiographer
with a tendency toward fabrication. With a voice that is both
humorous and heart-breaking, Kun reveals the hidden side of human
existence and shows us that the difference between what is
perceived and what is real is often more significant than we would
like to admit.
Young Baltimore attorney Hamilton "Ham" Ashe is a man torn between
fact and friendship. His neighbour, pal, and client, Sam Shoogey is
a former war hero, college football star, professional boxer, and
novelist. Or is he? What Hamilton does know is that he is
inexplicably drawn to the charming and gregarious raconteur who
makes his life hell -- but at least worth living. Representing
Shoogey in a nasty divorce case, Ham allows himself to be sucked
into his client's wild claims and adventures, much to the
consternation of his wife. As more and more of Shoogey's anecdotes
unravel and become either delusion or fabrication, however, Ham is
faced with the question, "Is a lie a lie if you know it's untrue,
or is it just a story?" With endnotes that may belie everything the
reader assumes, Michael Kun deftly plays with the form and function
of literature to weave two stories together and tell an innovative
tale with a delicate balance of humour and tragedy.
After twenty years of marriage, Mary Jude has had enough of
Benjamin. A thousand Benjamins couldnt make me happy, she says.
Lost in the monotony of a daily life and the undertow of memories,
Benjamin meets Kim, a woman eighteen years his junior who bears a
sadness in her green eyes that is connected to a scar that runs
from the base of her throat to her ribs. Slowly, Benjamin and Kim,
who for entirely different reasons believe themselves beyond
repair, begin to admit that this might actually be the time of
their lives.
This is a farcical look at celebrity worship in today's society
through the eyes of Sid Straw, an affable, if not boring, software
salesman who tries to rekindle an acquaintanceship with his former
college classmate turned Hollywood star, Heather Locklear. His
innocent letter requesting an auto-graphed picture begins a bizarre
series of events that eventually costs him his job, foils his
romantic intentions toward a co-worker, drains his finances, and
generally ruins his life. Sid is a Don Quixote character with large
blind spots regarding the fate of his one-sided correspondence with
the movie star and his own behaviour. He cannot escape the wrath of
lawyers, public relations bulldogs, angry bosses, and
ex-girlfriends that drag his life down the tubes. Until he fights
back.
